CHIEF COFFEY'S JANUARY 2010 MONTHLY REPORT
Chief Coffey provided an update on the on-going semi-tractor trailer traffic issues. Chief Coffey indicated
there are some restriction changes to highways that he is researching at this time. Chief Coffey feels that it is too early to confirm whether the change is a positive regarding our traffic problems.
Chief Coffey informed the Council that the City and School District will not be able to fill the crossing guard position. Chief Coffey stated that the crossing and school zone will remain a top priority for his patrolmen and that he will be adding a portible traffic sign. The sign will warn of a crosswalk and hopefully provide for added attention to the crosswalk.
Chief Coffey reported that the new Ford Expedition is nearly ready for the road.
Chief Coffey reported that the Police Department held their annual Christmas Party on December 11th.
Chief Coffey reported on two concerns the Animal Control Officer has regarding Animal Control operations.
Chief Coffey talked about some public service announcements he has placed on Channel 10. Chief Coffey reported that he has added another public service message concerning the new texting and driving laws.
Chief Coffey also reported on some upgrades that have been made to www.chesterpolicedepartment.com.
Chief Coffey later spoke on his Department's need for an additional fulltime police officer. Chief Coffey reported that his department has been operating at what he considers to be understaffed for a great deal of time now. Chief Coffey went into detail, reporting that the Department currently operates at 71.5% staffing levels compared to 3 years ago. Chief Coffey indicated that the demands for service have certainly not decreased. Chief Coffey reported that he had assigned money in the Police Department budget back in May, specifically for hiring one fulltime police officer as early as September (2009). Chief Coffey requested that the Mayor and City Council members to approve the hiring of the new officer.
The matter was tabled.
